Bouldering Palatinate the beginnings
The real story begins in the 1970s with icons like Wolfgang Güllich, who early on embraced their passion in the Palatinate Forest and developed routes on the sandstone there. Most of the first ascents, however, date back to the 1990s and 2000s, creating a multitude of beautiful and also incredibly difficult bouldering problems.
Nature conservation & rules of conduct
In the Palatinate region, nature conservation is a top priority. Therefore, there are a few rules of conduct that should be strictly adhered to in order to preserve bouldering on the local sandstone for the future.
Due to bird breeding, the following rocks are closed from February 1st to August 1st each year.
- Buchholzfelsen
- Rödelstein
- Retschelfelsen
Furthermore, all local rules and prohibition signs must be followed in order not to disturb the wildlife.
Since the Palatinate sandstone is very soft and extremely fragile, you should definitely use magnesia sparingly or avoid it altogether. A magnesia ban already exists in the Haardt 1 area, where many rocks have been damaged by excessive magnesia use. Furthermore, please always use the marked paths. Nature will thank you!
