Bahratal Bouldering.
Grippy Elbe sandstone in a compact valley south of Dresden — one of the finest bouldering destinations in eastern Germany, and easy to reach for everyone from Leipzig and Berlin. Here's the lowdown on the area and how to get on the rock guided with Daniel.
Sandstone bouldering in the Bahratal.
The Bahratal lies in Saxon Switzerland, south of Dresden near Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel and close to the Czech border. It is part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains — the home of classic Saxon climbing.
For bouldering it's a fine, compact spot: sandstone with great friction, blocks close together, plenty of rock over a short distance. If you're after a real outdoor destination in the east from Leipzig or Berlin, this is the place.
Protect the sandstone: Elbe sandstone is soft and delicate. Please only boulder when the rock is completely dry and follow the local rules — that way the area stays open for everyone.

In short.
Grippy sandstone
The Bahratal is part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains — fine-grained sandstone with great friction, similar in character to Fontainebleau, but right in the middle of Saxony.
A compact area
The blocks sit close together in the valley. Short walks from block to block, lots of bouldering instead of hiking — a comfortable way to spend a full day outside.
For Berlin & Leipzig
Reachable from Dresden in about 40 minutes via the A17/A4, and a day or weekend trip from Leipzig and Berlin. A real rock destination in the east of Germany.

Is there a bouldering guidebook for the Bahratal?
Yes, the area is well documented. If you'd rather go guided and skip the search for the best blocks, you can request an accompanied tour with Boulderwald — Daniel knows the approach, the pick of spots and the right lines for each level.
Does Boulderwald offer guided tours in the Bahratal?
