Bouldering in
Fontainebleau.
Bouldering in Fontainebleau means real sandstone, over 30,000 boulders in the forest, a good hour south of Paris. I've been coming here since 2019, now several months a year. It's different every time and always better than expected.

France's bouldering mecca.
I know why.
Bouldering in Fontainebleau is the original: 80 km² of forest, over 30,000 documented boulder lines, sandstone with a texture no route-setter could invent. No other bouldering area in France comes close, none in all of Europe. Every block has its own angle, its own friction, its own line. In the gym you repeat holds. Here you read the rock.
I came here for the first time in April 2019 and have spent several months a year in the forest of Fontainebleau ever since. I know the forest and its quiet spots that are still empty in the morning. I know the lines that suit beginners perfectly and the ones that keep advanced climbers busy.
My boulder trip is not a standard tour. We head to the spots that suit your group, matched to level, weather and how everyone's feeling that day.
How your bouldering week in Fontainebleau runs.
Here's what a typical week with me looks like. Scroll through the days.
- Day 1
Arrival & settling in
You arrive at your own pace, we move into the accommodation and go over the essentials: the week's flow, the spots and, if you like, a quick gear check.
- Day 2
Free bouldering
An easy start on the rock. Everyone climbs at their own level and I coach wherever it helps you most right now.
- Day 3
Technique: reading boulders
We learn to read boulders: analysing rock structures, footholds and holds and working out your own beta instead of being told it.
- Day 4
Consolidating
Applying and cementing what you've learned. Deliberately little theory, lots of climbing, coaching in the moments that count.
- Day 5
Projecting on the rock
You pick a boulder just below your limit and work it as a realistic day project.
- Day 6
The best for last
Back to the favourite spots and open projects. In the evening we round off the week together.
- Day 7
Departure
The trip home. You can do more than before, you've met new people and you'll almost certainly want to come back.

Coaching means watching closely.
Not standing by.
Where we boulder in Fontainebleau.
The best map for Fontainebleau? From the Trois Pignons massif to the blocks right behind town, I choose fresh every day — by weather, level and the group's mood.
Rocher Guichot
Classic, forested, ideal for beginners and advanced climbers alike.
Elephant
Iconic spot. Tall, elegant blocks right in the forest.
Buthiers
Sandstone in its purest form. This is where I work through most of the techniques.
Bois Rond
Relaxed atmosphere, broad range of grades. Great for mixed groups.
Apremont
Spectacular rock, few tourists. My personal favourite.
Cuvier
If not THE classic sector in Bleau, then close to it.

Voices from Bleau.
“The week was genuinely great fun and the perfect way into bouldering on real rock. Daniel is a really good coach and had the right boulders ready for every style.”
“Fantastic boulder coaching with guaranteed breakthroughs. What seemed impossible at the start suddenly became possible! A lovely introduction to bouldering on real rock.”
“Super relaxed and professional at the same time. Learned a lot — thanks for the great trip!”
Before you book.
What bouldering grade do I need?
No particular grade. We pick the lines to match your level. If you climb around grade 5 you're just as welcome as someone on 7A+ (Fontainebleau scale). Bleau has something for every level.
What's included in the €649 price?
Included: 5 days of personal coaching with Daniel, all crash pads, the complete choice of spots, and accommodation (gîte or equivalent). Not included: travel to Fontainebleau (a car is recommended), food, personal expenses.
How many people come along?
A maximum of 8, by design: that way everyone gets my attention and we sometimes have a spot entirely to ourselves.
When is the best time to boulder in Fontainebleau?
Spring and autumn give the best friction on the sandstone. But summer works well too — contrary to the cliché, the forest is actually quieter then, because the scene's peak season is elsewhere. For beginners the season matters less: we adapt spots and times to the weather.
I've never bouldered outdoors — is that okay?
Yes. If you boulder in the gym, that's enough of a base. I explain everything: moving on friction, landing safely, technique on real rock. You don't need your own crash pad and you can rent climbing shoes for €15 for the whole week.
Where are the best bouldering areas in Fontainebleau?
The classics are Apremont, Cuvier and the Elephant. Add the Trois Pignons massif with countless sectors, and for quiet days Buthiers or Bois Rond. The honest answer: the best area is the one that fits your level and the weather. That's exactly why I choose our spots fresh each day.
What is Fontainebleau famous for?
Two things: the château and the forest. The Château de Fontainebleau was a residence of the French kings and later of Napoleon. The forest around it is the best-known bouldering area in the world. Nearby Barbizon, the old painters' village, is known for landscape painting. We focus on the rock, but a side trip to the château fits easily into a rest day.
How far is Fontainebleau from Paris?
The town sits around 60 km south of Paris — roughly an hour by car or train. In the bouldering scene everyone just calls it Bleau.
